The city is doing an about face and taking down signs on pool change rooms that said children over three are not permitted to go into the opposite gender change room.

It comes after a backlash from parents over the weekend who did not feel comfortable leaving their young children alone in the change rooms.

“All those signs will be removed,” Coun. Mo Salih tells CTV News.

“It’s completely unacceptable and didn’t make sense.”

Salih says the city’s policy has always been children over 12 would not be permitted to go into the opposite gender change room.

He says it was staff who took the matter into their own hands and posted the signs after hearing from some pool users who were uncomfortable with opposite gender children in the change rooms.

Lynn Loubert, the city's aquatics manager, said on Sunday that some of the city’s pool sites are older and do not offer universal change rooms and options vary from site to site.

But Salih says, “It was a staff best practice but I would call it worst practice.”
