A 17-year-old girl is dead and a 19-year-old man is in hospital with life-threatening injuries following a crash in Huron County.
Ontario Provincial Police say a car was travelling on London Rd., near the community of Vanastra on Tuesday afternoon, when the driver came upon traffic waiting to turn left.
Police say it appears the driver went around the stopped vehicles on the gravel shoulder, but lost control of the car as it returned to the pavement, then crossed into the opposing lane and was hit by an armoured truck.
The only passenger in the car -- 17-year-old Bethany Blanchard of Clinton, Ont. -- was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver, 19-year-old Nicholas Dimmers of Clinton, was taken to a hospital in London with life threatening injuries.
The Avon-Maitland District School Board issued a statement Wednesday morning regarding the death of Bethany:
"The Avon Maitland family is deeply saddened and extends its heartfelt sympathy to the family and friends of Bethany Blanchard, age 17, a student at Central Huron Secondary School in Clinton. Bethany passed away last evening after succumbing to injuries suffered in a vehicle accident.
We are deeply affected by the tragic loss of this delightful student.
Bethany will be remembered as a happy, bubbly, and caring young woman that did whatever she could to make others smile. She was truly a bright and talented student in her classroom, loved school and enjoyed being with her friends.
The school district's team of counsellors, as well as members of the Tragic Events Response Support Team, will be at Central Huron Secondary School today and will be available to students, their families and staff members for as long as needed."
