As London’s jobless numbers revealed Friday showed a slight decrease from eight per cent to 7.7 per cent, a significant number of people also learned they’d be out of work at the end of the summer..
Stream London, purchased by Convergys in March, is purging 250 jobs, which is half of its workforce.
Convergys spokesperson Joe Thornton, based in Eagan, Minn., says the company lost a “significant line of business” in London.
“This is a challenging circumstance, particularly for the employees affected by the program that will end later this summer. We have an exceptional workforce and a strong track record in London.
“Convergys is working to identify potential opportunities to bring other client work to the facility, which could help offset some of the staff reductions in the months ahead.”
The company said affected employees could apply for work-at-home positions supporting other Convergys clients.
Convergys, a customer management firm that offers customer care and technical and billing support, has 150 sites worldwide and 125,000 employees.
Statistics Canada revealed London's unemployment rate continued to fall for a second straight month, as Ontario also reported lower unemployment.
