Visibility was the biggest problem for drivers in midwestern Ontario on Monday as a series of snow squalls brought high winds and heavy snow.

The Wingham and Owen Sound areas were hardest hit, with numerous school closures and road closures off and on throughout the day.

Major routes were track-bare with snowpacked and drifted sections. Secondary roads were reportedly snow covered and heavily drifted. Plowing and sanding operations continue.

As of 3:30 p.m. a snow squall warning remains in effect for Bruce and Grey County, while in Huron and Perth that has been downgraded to a snow squall watch.

Off-lake squalls may continue through the next couple of days. Local snowfall rates of 10 to 15 centimetres per day are possible into Wednesday morning.

Snow brings numerous crashes

Across the region the near zero visibility at times had police warning drivers to stay off the road if possible and responding to quite a few collisions.

In Owen Sound, a taxi lost control while turning right too quickly from 5th Ave. E. to 10th St. E. and was struck by a pickup travelling in the same direction that couldn't stop in time.

Two of the three passengers in the taxi, a 51-year-old and a 27-year-old woman, were taken to hospital for minor injuries and later released.

Owen Sound police say charges are pending in the collision.
