TORONTO - Ontario's New Democrats say they want answers on whether any smart meters linked to fires in Saskatchewan were installed in Ontario homes.

Community Safety critic Lisa Gretzky says the governing Liberals have had a week to investigate, but haven't provided an answer.

SaskPower plans to remove all 105,000 of its smart meters after they were linked to nine fires in the last two months.

Utilities in two U.S. cities have also decided to remove smart meters made by the same manufacturer, North Carolina-based Sensus.

Sensus has said that it has not confirmed whether smart meters sparked the fires.

Safety concerns have also been raised in British Columbia, but the government says it's not aware of any problems with its smart meters, which are made by a different manufacturer.
