As London police investigate the cause of a fatal weekend crash, family and friends are remembering 22-year-old Jan Broz.
Broz was a passenger in a Volkswagen that flipped and crashed into a tree on Perth Dr. on the Western University campus around 3:30 a.m. Sunday.
Two other men who were in the car remain in hospital. As of Sunday, the driver was in critical condition and the passenger in fair condition.
Their names and ages have not been released, but the university says none of the three were students.
Friends of Broz say the driver was just an acquaintance of the young man.
The crash scene has turned into a memorial, where flowers and ribbons have replaced a difficult scene.
London police Const. Ken Steeves explains "As we've seen throughout the media, I mean it was very tragic, not only the situation, but the scene visually as well, it does have an impact on our officers, and we do have resources for anybody who feels they need to speak to somebody about that."
Broz, a Saunders Secondary School graduate known to many as 'Jay' is being remembered as a bright young man who loved to work on cars.
On Sunday night, more than 100 hobby or modified cars reportedly drove past the scene in memory of Broz.
An only child, he immigrated with his mother from eastern Europe, and she must now plan his funeral.
Friends of the family have set up an account to help with the costs as his mother is on disability.
Donations can be made at the TD Canada Trust bank branch on Bradley Ave. west of Jalna Blvd.
Multiple possibilities for cause
London police say determining what happened will take some time as investigators work to rule out multiple possibilities.
Steeves adds, "The investigation is still early. We're looking at the possibility of alcohol being a factor, speed, road conditions, so there's a lot of things that have to be considered."
The vehicle involved is undergoing a mechanical review and a post mortem examination was conducted on Broz Monday.
No charges have been laid yet in this case.
