Part of a $20-million investment in Canada’s safety and security will go to the London Police Service to study incorporating texting and social media into a Next Generation 911 system.

Defence Minister Peter MacKay announced the funding for 26 science and technology projects to enhance public safety and security.

In a statement he said “These projects bring together the best minds from government, industry and academia, nationally and internationally, to support the development of knowledge, tools, processes, advice and strategies that are essential for safeguarding Canada.”

A Next Generation 911 system would let people send text messages, audio or video to the Emergency Response Centre.

London police will work with the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police, International Data Corporation Canada, Canadian Interoperability Technology Interest Group and Chris Kellet and Association Inc.

The study is expected to last two years and cost $96,000.
