A London MPP took the Wynne government to task over the recent inmate death at the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre (EMDC).
During question period on Tuesday, London-Fanshawe NDP MPP, Teresa Armstrong wanted answers from the Wynne government.
“I have been asking this government to take action on the problems faced by the Elgin-Middlesex Detention Centre for years now,” said Armstrong. “From overcrowding to lack of support for corrections officers, this government has remained silent, and now one man is dead and another is in critical condition due to a drug overdose.”
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services David Orazietti responded by saying his government has made numerous investments at EMDC, including 72 additional staff that have been hired since 2013.
A 27 year old man died on Monday morning from an apparent heroin overdose and another inmate is in hospital.
