The race for London mayor has its first major declared candidate.

Ward 7 councillor Matt Brown announced Friday he's running for the mayor's chair via social media.

Brown, who was first elected to council in 2010, says he will start his campaign by listening to the aspirations and frustrations of London residents. However, the 40-year-old high school teacher also says his focus remains on the 2014 budget.

Brown is the first major challenger to incumbent Mayor Joe Fontana, who has said he plans to run again, but has yet to make a formal announcement.

The municipal election will be held on Oct. 27.
