A mere day after council approved the Bus Rapid Transit system for London, Mayor Matt Brown is pitching the plan to the feds at the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ Big City Mayors’ Caucus in Winnipeg.
He's hoping to bend the ear of political heavyweights in Ottawa, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Minister of Infrastructure and Communities Amarjeet Sohi.
“This will be a great opportunity to present the Council-approved Bus Rapid Transit business case to our Federal partners,” said Mayor Brown in a news release put out by his office on Wednesday.
“This will be the largest infrastructure project in the City’s history and it will create a more modern, prosperous and environmentally sustainable community.”
On Tuesday, council approved a $500-million Full Bus Rapid Transit system for London.
The city is putting $129-million toward the project and is hoping the province and feds contribute additional dollars.
Construction is set to begin in 2018 with the full system operational by 2027.
