The SIU has identified a body pulled from Ottawa's Rideau River as 23-year-old Muhab Sultanaly Sultan wanted in the death of 18-year-old Jeremy Cook in London.
The SIU was called in after a man jumped into the Rideau River following an encounter with Ottawa police on Wednesday. Two officers followed him in but were unable to reach him before he went under.
According to Ottawa police, the man was allegedly driving a vehicle that tried to run down two bicycle patrol officers on Wednesday afternoon after a traffic stop.
Police pursued him to the Rideau River where a passenger was arrested but the driver fled. He was eventually spotted hours later attempting to cross the water but went under before he could be reached.
London police were investigating whether the man involved was Sultan. Police had issued a nationwide warrant for his arrest on a charge of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Jeremy Cook.
The 18-year-old had tracked his missing cellphone to a vehicle in the northeast end of the city earlier this month when he was shot and killed.
Police found Cook suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Cook was led to the area by tracking software he was using to locate his lost cellphone, which he had left in a taxi.
According to police, Cook tried to get his phone from three men in a nearby car, when the vehicle began driving away.
Cook then reportedly grabbed the driver's side door and shots were fired, killing him.
Police continue to investigate a second suspect, described as a black male with very short hair, wearing a black jacket or shirt and a fitted hat.
Investigators say they are also appealing to a third individual seen exiting the involved vehicle immediately prior to the incident to contact police.
