Attempted break-and-enter leads to charges
The Sarnia Police Service has made an arrest following a break-and-enter incident in Sarnia.
On Wednesday around 10 p.m., a suspect knocked on the door and tried to open the door at a home in the 800 block of Maxwell Street.
Police said the homeowner heard the knocking and door handle and opened the door to see who it was.
According to officers, the man then tried to force his way inside. The homeowner was able to get the door shut. The suspect ran away.
The man was later found by the SPS and arrested.
A 39-year-old is facing charges for break-and-enter and two counts of failure to comply with a probation order.
The SPS has issued tips to keep yourself safe:
- Keep doors, windows and garages locked at all times, even when you are home
- Use exterior lighting and motion-activated lights during nighttime hours
- Consider installing a doorbell camera or a home security system
- Trust your instincts. If something feels off, do not open the door and immediately call 911
- Any visits at unexpected times or giving unfamiliar or vague reasons should be considered suspicious
- Report any suspicious activity, such as if someone refuses to leave your property, if someone is seen loitering or if you see someone checking for open doors, call 911
