Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of widespread snow across southern Ontario over the weekend.

Forecasters say a disturbance from the southern U.S. is expected to track northeast towards the Great Lakes, across central Ohio Saturday to central New York state by Sunday morning.

Snow ahead of the disturbance is expected to reach southwestern Ontario Friday night and then spread northeast into the remainder of the region on Saturday.

Snowfall of 10 to 15 centimetres is expected in many areas by Saturday night, and it could be the first significant snowfall of the season for areas like Windsor, Kitchener-Waterloo, Hamilton and Toronto.

The areas included in the special weather statement are:

  • City of Toronto
  • Windsor - Essex - Chatham-Kent
  • Sarnia - Lambton
  • Elgin
  • London - Middlesex
  • Simcoe - Delhi - Norfolk
  • Dunnville - Caledonia - Haldimand
  • Oxford - Brant
  • Niagara
  • Halton Hills - Milton
  • Mississauga - Brampton
  • Caledon
  • York - Durham
  • Huron - Perth
  • Waterloo - Wellington
  • Dufferin - Innisfil
  • Bbelleville - Quinte - Northumberland
  • Kkingston - Prince Edward

Environment Canada adds there could be more snow in areas west of Lake Ontario and near the north shore of Lake Erie.

How far north the snow goes and total amounts will depend on the exact track and intensity of this disturbance.

Motorists are reminded to be prepared for poor driving conditions after the snow arrives Saturday.
