A resurfacing project on the Blue Water Bridge this spring may snarl traffic, as vehicles will be forced to use the eastbound span of the bridge for both directions of traffic.

The Michigan department of transportation made the announcement Tuesday, stating that the work on the original span of the bridge will preserve its safety and reliability. A waterproof undercoating will also be applied.

During the work, there will not be a lane for NEXUS card holders.

Drivers are encouraged to travel at off-peak hours to avoid delays.

The bridge is expected to re-open to all lanes of traffic in July.

The original bridge, built in 1937, currently serves westbound traffic entering the United States. The eastbound portion of the bridge was built in 1997.
