About 350 students and trainees are showing off their research in the second annual London Health Research Day at the London Convention Centre on Tuesday.

The event called ‘Driving innovation through collaboration’ is organized by Western's Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry and the Lawson Health Research Institute. It runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Almost 1,000 people attended last year’s event, making it the largest multi-disciplinary research day in Ontario.

Organizers are expecting a better day this year thanks to a $75,000 donation from the Bernard & Norton Wolf Family Foundation to attract high-calibre speakers. One of the speakers is an international expert in pharmacology, Dr. Terry Kenakin of the University of North Carolina's School of Medicine.

The event features diverse research projects underway by students, trainees and postdoctoral scholars. One study looks at whether hydrogen sulphide could be used to reduce tissue damage in a kidney transplant.

Other research projects are on diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Alzheimer's and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease.

The participants are judged on their scientific posters and platform presentations. CTV national medical correspondent Avis Favaro will emcee the awards dinner Tuesday night.
