A woman with strong ties to Western University has left a bequest of $1.6 million to help graduate students at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry.

The endowment will provide more than $60,000 annually through three scholarships for graduate students in the Departments of Microbiology and Immunology and Pathology

Marion Murray passed away in March. She grew up in London, the daughter of a pathologist and Western University professor. She also attended the school.

After leaving the city for a time, she returned to work in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology as a clinical laboratory technologist for 23 years - until 1965 - and then providing technical support for the lab training of students until her retirement in 1981.

Four years later she married Dr. Robert Murray, who was chair of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology for 25 years, and a professor in it for more than double that.

Dr. Robert Murray said in a statement “Marion very much enjoyed helping students realize their goal to be successful in their fields of study...Western was a significant part of her life and I am so pleased to know that her love of helping students learn will continue to be felt at Western.”

The gift announced Monday is in addition to $1.2 million from the pair - originally donated anonymously before her death.
