London Knights beat Saginaw at Memorial Cup, advance to final

The London Knights clinched a spot in the Memorial Cup championship game Wednesday night, beating the tournament hosts 4-2 in the final game of the group stage.

The win secured London top spot, thanks to a perfect record. The Saginaw Spirit will now have to play in the semi-final against the Moose Jaw Warriors on Friday night. The winner of the game will take on the Knights in Sunday’s final.

Denver Barkey broke a second period tie, putting London up 2-1. Saginaw equalised shortly after though, on a goal from Joey Willis.

The game remained tied late into the third period. That’s when Easton Cowan scored his first goal of the tournament. The game winner came with just 1:24 left in regulation. Cowan followed that up with an empty netter to seal the victory.

This was the eleventh meeting of the season between London and Saginaw. They faced each other four times during the regular season, splitting two wins apiece. They also faced off in the OHL playoff semi-finals, which the Knights won in six games.
