The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) has issued another cold weather alert, the fifth one this year, as a deep freeze is forecast to hit the London area.

The alert is in effect as of Tuesday afternoon and will continue until Monday, March 3rd.

The health unit issued the alert as Environment Canada is calling for a low of -16C Tuesday night and for a drop to -26C on Thursday.

Iqbal Kalsi, environmental health manager at the MLHU, said in a statement "Even though the calendar says we’re past winter’s halfway mark, the return of mild spring temperatures are still weeks away. We’re getting a reminder this week that no amount of wishful thinking is going to keep you warmer than a good jacket, toque and gloves."

People are being reminded to take precautions when the temperature drops.

"We can’t downplay the health risks associated with extreme cold temperatures. Dressing in layers and covering exposed skin are still the best ways to prevent frostbite, hypothermia and other cold-related injuries," Kalsi added.
