A funeral was held Monday morning for an 18-year-old man who police say was killed trying to retrieve his cellphone in London.
Hundreds packed a Brampton, Ont. funeral home to remember Jeremy Cook, who was described as an exceptional young man.
Family friend Maureen Dilorio, said in a statement on behalf of the family, “In the midst of dealing with the painful loss of Jeremy, we’ve been strengthened by the tremendous outpouring of support and sympathy from so many people over the past week...It is clear to us that Jeremy made a profound impact in his short time with us. His legacy will live on through the memories and relationships that he developed with so many wonderful family and friends.”The family also expressed thanks to the community and requested privacy, saying they will release a statement in the next few days through London police.
Dilorio also said a memorial fund has been set up in Cook’s honour through the crowdfunding site, GoFundMe.
Jeremy Cook used an app to track his phone to a parking lot in the city's north end last weekend after he left the device in a taxi cab.
According to police, he and a relative arrived at the scene, but when Cook tried to get his phone from three men in a nearby car, the vehicle began driving away.
Cook then reportedly grabbed the driver's side door and shots were fired, killing him.
The vehicle with the three men -- who Cook didn't know -- sped away, collided with a fence and then a telephone pole, police said, before all three suspects fled the scene.
A second-degree murder warrant has been issued for 23-year-old Muhab Sultan of Calgary, and police also want to talk to two others involved.
