Senior staff at the Thames Valley District School Board is again recommending Lorne Avenue Public School be closed and declared surplus.
The recommendation to close the east London elementary school comes despite a year of campaigning by area residents to save what has been described as a community hub for the Old East neighbourhood.
It also contradicts the recommendation of an Accommodation Review Committee, which had suggested keeping the school open and partnering with the city to use the building for other programs.
The school was subject to a review because it is considered to have low enrolment for the size of the facility, based on the Ministry of Education’s regulations.
However, daycare, extra-curricular and adult programs do not count toward the school’s occupancy.
If the school is closed at the end of June 2015 as recommended, students would be moved to Bishop Townsend Public School and St. George’s Public School.
School board trustees have the final say on the school’s fate and are meeting Tuesday night, where community members are expected to make it a full house.
