OWEN SOUND, Ont. - The president and CEO of the Owen Sound Transportation Company says there are no layoffs at the company that operates the Chi Cheemaun ferry between Tobermory and Manitoulin Island.
Susan Schrempf says 60 workers are on the company payroll and there are no plans to lay anyone off despite a delay in the start of this year's ferry service.
Grey-Bruce-Owen Sound MP Larry Miller had said on Thursday that 30 workers at the company were to be laid off on Friday.
The water levels in Lake Huron and Georgian Bay remain below the minimum level required for the ferry to dock and operate safely.
The start of the ferry's trips have been delayed this year until fenders that allow the ferry to dock safely at the Tobermory and South Baymouth ferry docks can be modified, or when water levels reach a point where use of the existing fenders is safe.
But Schrempf says everyone is continuing to do their jobs.
"With ships there's always maintenance that needs to be done," she said.
