Fifty cows and 20 calves were killed in a barn fire north of Walkerton, police say, while a second fire less than 24 hours later killed 300 pigs.
Around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, South Bruce OPP say officers and firefighters from Elmwood were called to a barn on Concession 12 in Brockton.
Damage from the fire is estimated at $500,000, which includes livestock, the barn structure itself, as well as farm equipment kept inside.
While the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, police say it does not appear to be suspicious.
Then on Thursday morning, 300 young pigs were killed in a barn fire south of Listowel.
Fire crews responded to the scene around 6:30 a.m.
The barn was not destroyed, but was heavily damaged.There is no word yet on what started the fire or a damage estimate.
The latest fires have animal rights groups calling for stricter fire codes for farm buildings., including sprinklers in most barns.
But farmers say there haven't been more farm fires recently, we're just hearing about them more.
