First tornado of the year confirmed northeast of London

Environment Canada has confirmed the unsettled weather over the weekend brought the first tornado of the year in Ontario just northeast of the city.

Officials say it happened at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, about halfway between Thorndale and Bryanston, and damaged a barn in the area.

Engineers from the University of Western Ontario investigated and along with analysis by Environment Canada, confirmed an EF1 tornado with estimated wind speeds of 175 km/h.

The severe thunderstorms also brought a microburst in London on Saturday afternoon with damaging wind gusts at 100 to 120 km/h that caused a roof to fail and tree damage, as well as shifting an air conditioner atop a shopping centre.

In the Bryanston to St. Marys areas, there were also reports of wind damage to trees and minor damage to buildings.

Significant rainfall accumulations were also reported from Saturday's thunderstorms and the rain that fell on Sunday.
