Londoners rolled up their sleeves and took part in the 19th annual London Clean and Green on Saturday.

"I think it is really important to contribute to our community but also teach our children the importance of picking up after themselves and to help keep our parks and recreation areas clean," says Kelly Conner who brought her daughter along.

According to organizers, close to 10,000 people take part.

"After a long and snowy winter there is definitely no shortage of garbage to be picked up so that's why every little bit counts," says Jay Stanford Director, Environmental Programs & Solid Waste.

"What you see on the ground unfortunately is an accumulation over 5-6 months. So now that the spring is here everyone wants the city looking great. It takes a huge team effort and that's what you see here going on," Stanford adds.

Cleaning up the city doesn't just stop with Clean and Green.

The city has also launched a program called Adopt-a-Street, a resident driven initiative that gets neighbourhoods to work together and care for their streets.

"If you can't get out today, make sure to get some gloves and get a bag and make sure to spruce up the city any time you can. It needs your help," says Stanford.
