For the first time, paramedics in London and Middlesex County are appearing on the list of public sector workers earning more than $100,000 a year. It’s the result of the county taking over the service from a private company.
About 22 employees of Middelsex-London EMS made the Sunshine List in 2013; 12 of them paramedics.
Experienced paramedics earn about $80,000 dollars in base pay, but last year a dozen took home between $100,000 to $114,000.
John Prno dpty chief-“We have 230 paramedics and just over 20 on this list. 10 per cent,” says John Prno, Middlesex-London EMS deputy chief. “It’s not an overarching problem. It’s a small group that, when we look at the numbers we can justify.”
Many rural ambulance stations are staffed for only 12 hours a day. On-call overnight paramedics earn additional pay.
To best balance care and cost, the county has hired a consultant to review the service.
