Friends of a Clinton-area couple who lost their newborn son in a crash in Wingham two Sundays ago are rallying around the family with an online fundraising effort.
Marsha Benninger is still in critical condition after a van slammed into her pickup truck on Wingham’s main street Sept. 14.
The driver of the other vehicle is reportedly facing charges related to the collision, but no details have been released
Benninger - who was pregnant at the time of the crash - had to be extricated from the vehicle. Their yet-to-be-born son Sawyer did not survive the collision.
A box of keepsakes, including a lock of his hair was stolen from the couple's vehicle in a London hotel parking lot as her husband stayed with her at the hospital.
While many people have offered rewards as high as $500 for the return of these items, friends have set up an online fundraiser to help the family as they deal with the costs of constant trips to the hospital, bills, gas and the ongoing care that will be needed in the months and years to come.
Friends Jordan and Colby Hillier started the effort and are hoping to raise $5,000.
On the site they say, ”None of us can imagine what they are going through, but we can help. We can't replace what they have lost, and money isn't the answer but it can be one worry off their mind.”
