Today marks the 40th anniversary of the Franco-Ontarian flag.

The green and white flag flew from dawn to dusk outside many municipal buildings across the province on Friday.

Thousands of French students in Ontario joined in the festivities - by singing, dancing and wearing the symbolic green and white colours.

And at London's Victoria Park, about 700 Francophone students from the region gathered to celebrate the flag.

The Franco-Ontarian flag first flew on Sept. 25, 1975, and was officially recognized as the emblem of the Franco-Ontarian community in 2001.

The green and white banner bears both the fleur-de-lys and a stylized Ontario trillium.
