London police are among the forces involved in the Festive RIDE campaign, which was officially launched on Friday.

Members of the Ontario Provincial Police, Stratford Police Service, Strathroy Police Service and St. Thomas Police Service were also on hand for the local launch.

While the RIDE program got underway in regions across Ontario on Saturday, police are hoping to draw more attention to the campaign, which aims to Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere.

In a statement, Chief Supt. Don Bell, commander of the OPP Highway Safety Division, said "I am calling on all road users to help us keep everyone safe over the holidays. Never allow yourself to drink and drive, never allow someone you suspect is impaired by alcohol or drugs to drive and if you are out on the road and suspect that a driver is impaired, call 911. I would like to thank in advance the hundreds of thousands of drivers we know we can count on to take these simple but important measures to help us get everyone through the holiday safely."

OPP say national statistics for 2011, the most recent available, show 90,277 impaired driving incidents that year, with Ontario having one of the lowest rates among the provinces.

Over the last two Festive RIDE campaigns, OPP issued 1,375 impaired driving charges and 1,208 warn range suspensions, which cause a driver to lose their licnec for at least three days.

The campaign runs until January 2nd.
