Controversial shoreline development to begin construction in new year
Port Elgin’s Cedar Crescent Village is slated to begin construction on Jan. 3, 2025.
The Town of Saugeen Shores, says it was just notified by the private company building the shoreline retail development, that it plans to start construction early next year.
The public-private project, which will see the town retain ownership of the land and lease out the land to the private company to build the multi million-dollar development, has been plagued by community push-back and construction delays.
The Cedar Crescent Village, which is expected to feature restaurants, shops, along with public spaces for markets, and activities, was supposed to be built by now — it received initial approval from Saugeen Shores council back in 2019.
Construction was supposed to start several times since then, but for numerous reasons, has not moved forward.
Saugeen Shores Mayor Luke Charbonneau says he’s excited to see the project finally break ground.
“This significant development marks a new chapter for the community, bringing together commercial and recreational spaces designed to enhance the quality of life for both residents and visitors. The Cedar Crescent Village project will blend modern amenities with the dynamic atmosphere of Saugeen Shores, featuring retail and dining options, along with welcoming public spaces that enrich the Town’s waterfront offerings,” says Charbonneau.
Opponents of the project believe it will be a beachfront eyesore that will cause parking and environmental issues, so close to the waterfront.
