The City's new initiative to become a more welcoming community started Saturday.

The  Community Diversity and Inclusion Strategy is open to all Londoners interested in creating a more inclusive city and then engaging the broader community in conversations about the initiative.

The first of three open sessions was held at the London Convention Centre and had about 200 in attendance.

The street-level approach is being called the first of its kind for London, coming shortly after council unanimously voted against police street checks known as carding.

"There are minumum requirements that are being brought by the province. I think we can do better in London. We're using a very similar process, bringing in a community of members together to come up with some solutions that are made right here in London," Mayor Matt Brown said.

The next two sessions are February 4 and March 8.
