As the May 21 strike deadline looms, Western Campus Police held a rally Friday at the university gates.

The OPSEU members have been without a contract since June 30, 2015.

The rally was mere metres away from convocation ceremonies at Alumni Hall.

OSPEU admits it timed the rally to draw attention to the officer's concerns surrounding safety, pay and training as well as being asked to act as dispatchers.

"They're not trained to be dispatchers when they're asked to. And so when there is short staffing here at their centre, the officers fill in and that's unacceptable," says Len Elliott, OPSEU Regional VP.

The Director of Western Police John Carson wrefused to comment to CTV, but Western's Vice-President of Media Relations Helen Connell says the school is prepared for a lockout or a strike.

"We will have contingency plans in place. We believe campus safety is the highest operational priority here. So we will not do anything to jeopardize that," says Connell.
