Calling five byelections on the eve of a summer long weekend has been criticized, and the London West candidates know getting out the vote in a tight race could make all the difference.
There was a steady stream of voters at polling stations in the London West riding on Thursday, with many voicing their hopes that people would participate.
Candidates and party leaders were also out all day trying to encourage residents to vote.
Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne was in London Thursday supporting Liberal candidate Ken Coran and says “That’s the most important message especially for young people…it’s just such a privilege to talk to people and be part of the process.”
NDP Leader Andrea Horwath was also in town trying to boost candidate Peggy Sattler’s chances. She’s been a regular visitor to the region since the byelection was announced.
“We never take anything for granted,” she says. “We always work right until the very end so our team is out there in droves reminding people that it’s election day.”
And making voters familiar with their candidate may be crucial.
PC candidate Ali Chahbar voted with his family by his side and says he’ll be door knocking until the very last minute trying to win over any undecided residents.
“Until the polls close at nine o’clock I’ll be going up until nine and we’ll sit back and relax and watch the polls come in.”
CTV London will have full coverage of the byelection results on the CTV News at 11.
