Ornge Air Ambulance is resuming nighttime flights to some 'black hole' remote helipads after the addition of solar-powered lights.

Last year, amid concerns for crew and patient safety, the service halted night landings at a number of helipads in Ontario with low natural lighting and only reflective navigational aids.

Now the Town of Saugeen Shores is among the first of 91 sites to install new solar aviation lights after trials at three high-volume 'black hole' helipads.

Ornge paid to have the retro-reflective cones installed, and is resuming air ambulance flights to the municipality.

Future maintenance costs will be the responsibility of Grey Bruce Health Services, but are expected to be minimal.

It is expected the other 90 sites in Ontario will have the lighting equipment installed in the near future.
