The Special Investigations Unit has found no grounds to charge an officer after a crash near Watford that left a 62-year-old in critical condition.
Just before 4:30 p.m. on July 9, 2015, a Lambton County OPP officer was westbound on Confederation Line when he spotted an eastbound Sunfire travelling very fast.
Shortly afterward, near the Sexton Road and Mullifarry Drive intersection, the Sunfire left the road, entered a wheat field, rolled and became airborne before landing upright.
The driver, a 62-year-old man, was ejected from the car, and suffered multiple injuries including fractures that required surgery.
In a statement, SIU Director Tony Loparco said, “It would appear that the police vehicle was never very close to the red Sunfire, particularly as the Sunfire neared the collision site where witnesses suggest a gap of about ten seconds and a considerable distance separated the vehicles, suggesting the officer did not fuel the reckless operation of the man’s vehicle."
He added that the Sunfire had been travelling at high speeds for a period time before the collision, and speed was a significant factor in the crash.
The SIU has concluded its investigation into the collision and says there is no evidence of criminality on the part of the officer.
