One person has died, and three others have serious injuries after a head on collision near Erin Friday night.

Wellington County OPP say it happened around 10:45 p.m. on Trafalgar Road between Wellington County Roads 50 and 42.

The driver of a Honda Civic, 47-year-old Janice Bye of Holstein was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bye’s daughter, 18-year-old Alexa Bye and her 18-year-old friend Meghan Culver of Hanover were passengers in the car.

They were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Both were later transported to Hamilton General Hospital.

They are listed in critical but stable condition.

The driver of the other car, 47-year-old Michael Canavan of Erin was also taken to hospital with serious injuries.

“It appears that his vehicle crossed over into the southbound lane where the collision occurred,” explained Const. Marylou Schwindt with Wellington County OPP.

Caravan faces multiple charges including impaired driving causing death, and two counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm.

“The consequences of drinking and driving are tragic, and we’ve learned that again tonight,” Schwindt said.

“It’s really discouraging that yet again we’re in this position of notifying another family that a member’s been lost,” she continued.

The road was closed for several hours while police investigated.
