The unemployment rate in London rose last month. Statistics Canada says the city’s rate for November was 7.8 per cent, up from 7.5 per cent in October.

That's the highest it's been since April.

On a national level, the economy lost 10,700 jobs last month after healthy gains in September and October, boosting the jobless rate to 6.6 per cent.

Economists had expected the economy would add 5,000 jobs.

Nearly 34,000 jobs were lost in Ontario in November, pushing that province's unemployment rate up to seven per cent.

Tech industry appears to be bucking trend

But if you're looking for a job in the tech industry, then London is the place to look, with hundreds of jobs available.

Kapil Lakhotia of the London Economic Development Corporation says, "There are well over 500 open positions at the moment...and we have a bunch of high-growth companies in the City of London, which will see this number growing even more."

At London-based Voices.com staff are constantly training new hires. The company, which has seen quick growth in the past 10 years, keeps expanding.

Stephanie Ciccarelli, chief marketing officer, says, "So the more people we are hiring, the more space we need, the more jobs being created. It's just a wonderful experience to outgrow the places that we've been."

That's also the case for Inner Geek, a mobile app development company that recently moved into a larger space downtown.

CEO Colton Hathaway says, "We have room for about 30 here in London at our current HQ, and then whether or not we look at additional office space here in London or expand beyond the city, we're just happy to be a part of that growth for London."

Even though it's a very specialized industry, the growth in London's tech sector will help the city's economy, according to Lakhotia.

"We are experiencing a lot of demand for visual artists, animation, designers, programmers, specialized skill sets that we need to recruit from external markets."

In turn bringing more people to work and live in the Forest City.
