The Green Party of Ontario is calling on the province to expand the area around nuclear reactors where residents are given preventive medication in case of a radiation leak.
The province is currently mailing potassium iodine pills that protect people from thyroid cancer to residents living within 10 kilometres of the Pickering, Darlington and Bruce nuclear generating stations.
Green Party leader Mike Schreiner says that should be expanded to 30 to 50 kilometres -- matching precautions taken by governments in Europe such as Switzerland.
Schreiner says that would help protect residents of Whitby-Oshawa, who vote in a provincial byelection next week.
