Saugeen Shores police and OPP investigators are looking into a fatal collision between a snowmobile and an SUV.
Police say the crash occurred Sunday around 5 p.m. at Bruce-Saugeen Town Line and the Rail Trail just west of Highway 21.
Investigators say a Ford Explorer was eastbound on the Bruce-Saugeen Town Line when it was involved in collision with a southbound snowmobile travelling at a high rate of speed that failed to stop for a stop sign at the crossing.
The snowmobile reportedly struck the rear driver's side of the Explorer, sending the SUV spinning into a ditch on the south side of the road.
Neither the driver nor a passenger in the SUV were injured.
However, the snomobile operator, 18-year-old Clint Parker of Kincardine, died.
Saugeen Shores police Chief Dan Rivett says, "The coroner attended and prounounced death at the scene and an autopsy was held this morning in Owen Sound where it was determined that he died of head injuries."
Police say Parker had been out for the day with a group of snowmobilers, and was headed back to Kincardine, but his snowmobile was not running properly and he ended up travelling some distance behind the group when the collision occurred.
Rivett says "Everything including driving has their dangers, the best thing you can always do is be defensive, and obey everything you can possibly obey, traffic signal-wise, and take care."
The road and Rail Trail were closed for some time, but have since re-opened.
With most trails in Ontario now open, February is statistically the worst month for snowmobile fatalities in the province.
