An 87-year-old woman and her 11-year-old great-grandson are dead after a fire at a home in Mt. Brydges.
The fire broke out at the home at Parkhouse Drive and Edgewood Lane in the south end of the village around 3 a.m. Friday.
The Strathroy-Caradoc Fire Department says they pair were found unresponsive in the home and transported to hospitals in Strathroy and London where they were pronounced dead.
They have been identified as Ethan Taylor and his great-grandmother Gwen Janes.
Roger Janes is still reeling from the loss of his mother and great-nephew, and says he has no idea what could have happened.
"What caused it? It was a relatively new house. The furnace had recently been checked and maintained, you know. What's going on?"
There were few signs of visible damage from the fire on the outside of the home except for broken windows at the front.
Neighbour Dan O'Brien says, "It didn't look like it was bad at all. There was no flames coming out of the house, never did see anything, and the garage door I think was open - seen a little bit of smoke coming out of the garage door...Firefighter then popped the windows then smoke started coming out of the windows at the other end of the house."
Police remained on scene Friday afternoon and the Ontario Fire Marshal's Office has been called in to investigate.
Strathroy-Caradoc police Sgt. Jason Cartwright says, "Very close to home for a lot of people in the community. It's a very small, tight-knit town and it affects all of us personally and we want to conduct the investigation as well as we possibly can."
There is no word on the cause of the fire and officials say a post mortem has not yet been scheduled.
