The Middlesex-London Health Unit (MLHU) has issued its first cold weather alert of the year. According to MLHU, a bitter windchill is expected Tuesday making it feel like minus 21 C in the morning and minus 16 C in the afternoon.

During these cold weather events, the health unit recommends:

  • Staying in heated buildings as much as possible
  • Dressing appropriately when going outside
  • Drinking warm fluids but avoiding caffeinated or alcoholic beverages
  • Avoiding strenuous exercise while out in the cold
  • Preparing your home and car for winter

A cold weather alert is issued by the health unit when forecast lows reach a temperature of minus 15 C or lower, a windchill of minus 20 C or lower is forecast, and/or Environment and Climate Change Canada issues a "Cold Alert" or "Cold Warning."
