Thanks to the efforts of a neighbour, a woman is safe this morning following an early morning fire at a home in Byron.

Fire officials say the house is a total loss following the blaze. The woman was asleep and was alerted to the fire by her neighbour.

According to witness Jeff Mohring the neighbour was also able to rescue a dog locked in a crate within the home.

"(The fire) was at the back of the house when I first saw it, but by the time I got out here, five, ten minutes tops, it was spread to the roof... with flames shooting a good ten feet high," said Mohring.

District Fire Chief Dave Hood tells CTV News that the alarm call came in at 1:34 a.m. for a fire at 1356 Collingwood Ave.

The house was fully involved when firefighters arrived. Crews had to work to stop the fire from spreading to neighbouring homes. However at least one other house suffered damages due to exposure.

In total, one home was destroyed, along with a garage, shed and car, and the attic of another home sustained heavy damage. All occupants were able to escape unharmed.

A preliminary damage estimate for the home at 1356 Collingwood Ave is estimated at $425,000.

The cause of the fire has not been determined.

A fire investigator has been on scene for a preliminary walk through, and is scheduled to return later this morning.
