Ontario's premier says she's pleased with the Supreme Court's ruling that the federal government must work with the provinces on any fundamental changes to the Senate.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper had proposed term limits on senators and the creation of a "consultative election" process to choose nominees.

But Canada's top court justices decided that would require the approval of at least seven provinces -- representing 50 per cent of the population.

Premier Kathleen Wynne says Ontario needs to be a part of any decision about changing the character of the Senate.

She says the Senate plays a valuable role as a chamber of "sober second thought."

As for any plans to abolish the Senate completely, the Supreme Court ruled that would need consent from every province.

Wynne says Ontario would be happy to participate if the federal government wants to discuss Senate reform with all the provinces and territories.
