Police in Woodstock are warning residents after numerous sightings of coyotes in the city's south end.

Officials say the coyotes have been spotted in residential areas including Ferguson Dr., Lindsay Rd. and Southside Park by the skate park.

There are believed to be dens in the area of the Woodstock Peace Lighthouse on Ferguson, and police say they are working with the Ministry of Natural Resources and the city to address the issue.

Police have released recommendations should people be faced with a coyote:

  • Make noise and make yourself seem bigger - an average adult coyote is about 35 pounds and will be intimidated by people. They may stop and observe, but will eventually run.
  • Do not run away or turn your back on them as a coyote is hardwired to chase. Stand your ground and then back away slowly while making loud noises
  • Coyotes can see small dogs and cats as prey. When walking your dog, keep them on a short leash. Cats should not be left outdoors alone when a coyote is suspected to be in the area.

While police say wild animals within the city limits are not unusual, people are advised not to approach coyotes as they can be unpredictable if they feel trapped or cornered.
