Winnipeg under extreme cold warning

The extreme cold is starting to settle in parts of Manitoba, including in the city of Winnipeg.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) issued an extreme cold warning for southern Manitoba, ranging from just outside of Portage la Prairie up to the Pelican Rapids area. The warning including spots like Winnipeg, Brandon, Minnedosa, Roblin, and Boissevain.

The warning means it could feel like minus 40 with the windchill or colder.

"A cold, Arctic air mass is moving over eastern Saskatchewan and western Manitoba. Under this cold air mass, overnight lows will drop to near minus 30 and colder. These cold temperatures combined with northerly winds of 10 to 15 km/h will produce extreme wind chill values of minus 40 and colder," the warning reads.

"There will be some moderation in the extreme wind chill values during the day on Wednesday, but expect extreme wind chill values to return again on Wednesday night."

People are told to limit their time outdoors and if they do need to be outside, they should dress in layers and cover any exposed skin.

People are also reminded to keep pets indoors during these temperature drops.
