A 26-year-old man has been charged after a van reportedly attempted to pass a school bus with its lights flashing and struck the side of the bus.

Haldimand County OPP were called to Highway 3 East in Cayuga around 8:20 a.m. last Thursday.

Police say a westbound First Student Bus Line school bus was stopped with overhead lights and stop sign arm activated to pick up students when the collision occurred.

A westbound van, described as a white Mercedes contractor's van, reportedly passed the school bus in the eastbound lane, striking the side of the bus.

No injuries were sustained by either the driver of the school bus, 53-year-old Holly Wooley of Haldimand County, or the 30 students on board.

As a result of the OPP investigation, Justin Weikman of Haldimand County, has been charged with failing to stop for a school bus under the Highway Traffic Act.
