Ten people were sent to hospital with injuries after a collision between a horse-drawn buggy and a car near Clifford.

The crash happened around 12:15 a.m. Thursday on Highway 9, just south of County Road 2 in Minto Township.

Wellington County OPP say a 2012 Volkswagon GTI was travelling northbound on Highway 9 when it collided with a northbound horse-drawn vehicle.

There were 10 people inside the buggy, ranging in age from two years old to 45 years old. Five people were taken to Listowel Hospital and five were transported to the Palmerston Hospital. Two people were later transported by air ambulances to hospitals in London and Hamilton.

All but two of the people in the buggy, including the 45-year-old driver Mark Streicher, have since been released from hospital. The four- and six-year-old children who were airlifted to regional hospitals remain there in critical but stable condition.

The horse and the male driver of the Volkswagon, 29-year-old Adam Leggett of Stoney Creek, were not hurt.

Firefighters from the Clifford Fire Department along with paramedics from Guelph-Wellington, Bruce, Perth and Grey County also attended the scene.

The OPP west region collision investigation unit is helping to determine what caused the crash, closing Highway 9 between County Road 2 and the 14th Line of Minto Township.
