For the sixth time this summer a playground in London has been the target of arson.

The latest case occurred at Jack Chambers Public School at 1650 Hastings Dr. in the city’s north end just after 5 a.m. Wednesday.

Investigators could be seen combing through the scene looking for evidence after someone attempted to set playground equipment on fire.

The fire caused an estimated $6,000 in damage to the play set, but the structure appeared to remain mostly intact.

Const. Ken Steeves tells CJBK a suspect was arrested shortly after the fire call came in, around 5:30 a.m.

The 19-year-old male is now facing a charge of arson causing property damage and has been released from custody. He is scheduled to appear in court again on Oct. 1.

His identity is not being released as police say they are concerned for his safety and well-being.

Police say there is no indication this incident is connected to a string of playground fires in the southwest end of the city where a total of five fires have been reported at playground sets along Viscount Road since early July.

Another fire in a shopping cart at a playground in the White Oaks area last week did not affect the equipment and police said at the time it was not considered part of the string of earlier arsons.
