A 34-year-old man was sentenced Friday to four and a half years in prison in an impaired driving case that killed a Middlesex County man.

Mason Neufeld of Strathroy-Caradoc pleaded guilty to imparied driving causing death after 45-year-old Leonard Darryl Westgate of Adelaide Metcalfe was struck in a crash near Strathroy.

Neufeld was also given a seven-year driving ban.

Westgate died when Neufeld’s vehicle struck him on Napperton Drive, west of Strathroy in July 2015.

The car left the roadway and continued west on private property before hitting a tree and flipping on its side.

Neufeld was treated for non-life threatening injuries in hospital before being released.

Before handing down her sentence, Justice Eleanor Schnall didn't go called the situation a horrible tragedy in some many respects.

"In 25 years on the bench, I have never come across the degree of injuries suffered by Mr. Westgate."

Court also heard that Neufeld has taken treatment programs for alcoholism.

During the sentencing hearing, members of the Westgate family were quietly sobbing.

Family members left the courthouse without any comment.
