Two St. Thomas women have been arrested for allegedly planning, funding and soliciting help to murder one of their common-law husbands.
Members of the St. Thomas Police Service’s Criminal Investigation Unit and uniformed officers arrested the women in Aylmer on Thursday.
Staff.-Sgt. Hank Zehr says “A 46-year-old female and a 51-year-old female both are charged with conspiracy to commit murder and counselling to commit an indictable offence.”
Police say an investigation revealed the women had been working on the plan over the last several months.
The intended victim is now safe, and it’s unclear how close the suspects came to following through on the alleged plans.
Zehr says he’s never seen anything like it in his career in policing, “What we are saying is there is two people that were plotting to kill another individual.”
Sources tell CTV News the plot was conceived for financial gain, but police won’t confirm the motive.
Zehr says the force was tipped off about the plot, spent a week watching the parties involved and interviewing witnesses before taking action.
He adds that at this time it’s not believed any physical abuse was involved in the case, by any party.
The two women made a court appearance Friday morning and were remanded in custody. They will make another appearance via video on September 18th.
Police say the courts have prevented the names of the suspects from being released to protect the identity of the male victim.
