Police say a standoff in St. Thomas has ended peacefully around 14 hours after negotiations with the suspect began.

The 31-year-old man was taken into custody shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday after surrendering to police.

The series of events actually began around 3 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon when a 30-year-old St. Thomas woman went to the police station.

She reported being assaulted by her common-law partner on numerous occasions over the last two months, suffering minor injuries.

An investigation found grounds to charge him with three counts of assault, two counts of assault with a weapon, two counts of uttering threats and two counts of breach of probation.

When the woman returned to her residence around 7:20 p.m. she found him inside and contacted police.

The male then barricaded himself inside the home. St. Thomas Police Service negotiators spoke with the suspect until his surrender.
